Director Urban Local Bodies, Kashmir TufailMatoo while pledging to reform the function- ing of the department said that the novel measures are in the offing that would enable the government to sanitize the areas which have so far been undermined. In a brief chat with the Kashmir Leader news magazine, Matioo said that in a pilot mode, there will be four districts selected wherein the waste disposal shall be done on scientific basis besides ensuring the solid waste management.
“The effort shall be put in vogue in south Kash- mir districts and since the efficiency of the project has to be ascertained , the pilot effort shall be put on trial basis,” Matoo said. He added further that four t0 five municipal committees shall be involved in the project at first phase to check how it would yield the desired results. The Director ULB who in the recent past assumed charge said fur- ther that staff rationalization would be among his top priorities and that he would strive to make the depart- ment more work and result oriented. He added that the people working in his department would be involved in various vital projects so that the people who are generally disgruntled towards the lack of sanitization could heave a sigh of relief.

Matoo said that the street lights in the areas falling under various mu- nicipal committees shall be made functional as the complaints continue to pour in about their de- functionalities. Pertinently, the Housing and Urban Development Department is mandated to frame policies, pre- pare plans and schemes for growth of urban areas and to provide civic amenities in urban areas. Further, the Department is also entrusted with the responsibility of strength- ening urban local self governments enabling them to discharge their functions effectively in terms of pro- viding quality municipal services to the people.
The Department is also responsible for framing of Housing policy, create Legal, Institutional and Procedural changes to encour- age investment in housing sector and to facilitate creation of adequate housing stock etc.
